Buhay Kalsada

Buhay Kalsada or Life on the Streets is a site for people to see how life is in the City Streets. Im a newbie photographer and I live in Manila Philippines where I am constricted in taking photos of peoples daily lives and activities.

As much as I enjoy walking and sniping off photos, there are times that I'd prefer to just sit with people and talk to them and here I will try to document the lives I have tried to hear and in my own little way, attach myself into.

This site is an adventure, I hope you consider it as an adventure and I hope that you will never be the same again.

I also have a flickr account where you can view most of my photos. Please do check them out if you have time.

Manong Felix of Baywalk.

I cannot tell you anything much about Manong Felix but how i experienced our acquaintance. His line of thought and words are mostly difficult for me to understand and comprehend. At 69, He still dives for clams and sells them to passersby. Was born in Tacloban Leyte and with a family with not much story to recover from.

I can still remember the days of my first camera. It was also one of my first shoots in Baywalk and as usual, alone. One character popped out of the scene. An old man seated in one of the benches and puffing a smoke. His features, one that anyone would fear and respect. A lion. King of the place.

I didnt have the guts to ask to take his photo so like every one else I took a picture of, I snipped off a few ones. Photos that made my day.

A couple more times I went to Baywalk and learned that he was still there. Sometimes with the same clothing. He lived at the place! Well technically he doesn't, he just happens to be there fishing most of the time. :D

So trembling, I ap...

Manong Agapito of Sta Cruz Manila.

From daylight to sundown, every body who walks along Escolta Sta Cruz Manila sees him. Rain is the only restriction, in which he cannot but stay at home and pray that tomorrow may spare him some financial help, one constricted by today. In the morning his wife aids him to where he will whole-day play his harmonica and tap with his can-socked foot for the beats.

He hails from Masbate, the same tragic place where he lost his arms and eyesight because of Dynamite Fishing. He was 30 then. Prior though and even though he only finished the 3rd Grade, he has worked for his town as a Baranggay Chairman and for the City Mayor as well. A dedication that belongs to public service.

One of the most photographed characters in the streets as many claims. Vendors around him says that Manong Agapito is a very jolly person. Despite the hopelessness of his appearance , very enthusiastic in telling about his life to many. Though unfortunate in many of his attempts in living life, he never fails to hig...

Bacolod: Unparalleled Happiness

How different is a happy beggar from a rich and happy individual? I guess I can only say that the latter lacks the peace of mind necessary to be truly happy, but that I cannot contest.
I can only compare with what I saw in this person that gave me the true meaning of happiness and contentment.

Bacoleños can see him in front of the San Sebastian church every Sunday. Not an inch of sadness on his face. Lines of smiles from end to end. All happy, he struts and rolls and tumbles in hopes to get peoples attention. A very unlikely seen.
Probably a birth defect caused his feet not to grow and some of his fingers be intertwined. He's probably in his teens hence the countless pimples he has on his face. He boards his skateboard to get to where he needs to and feeds from what people can share.

Quite an unlucky person if I may emphasize.

But his mood. One that could launch ones face to glee. An infallible scene of one with so much happiness. A contrast of the colors of life in a busy place such ...

Binondo Kids.

Their innocence, happiness, their smile, everything is just authentic. Acts that could make ones day complete.
One street shoot led me to notice these two kids while FlickristasIndios were walking in Binondo. These two kids, seated along a closed establishment, passing time.

Reminiscing.
I remember days when my friend Daniel would invite me to pass time with him and his friend. We hang out at the nearby cemetery, far and secluded, a top of a low level tomb, where they'd consume a pack of Phillip Morris. Being a shy and soft person when I was still in Elementary, I just watch them fool around with each other and puff some smokes every now and then. But that is not how I really remember Daniel. We grew up together and went to the same prep school. He was my best friend.

Today and Back.
Kids today are lucky. With all the cheap china toys available and the wide available options to choose what happiness to indulge into, PSPs, Xbox, Gameboys, Internet Games and wh...

Ballpen Painting : Tatay Jayme Vinal.

I know not much about him but I was able to see the artist in him one time I took a break from a long walk in his humble table provided beside his stall.

Seeing my camera atop the table he asked, "Sir are you from the press?" I smiled and said, "No, its just a hobby of mine." He mentioned that once, a reporter opted to document his paintings but he wasn't around when they came and lost his opportunity to be featured in a local newspaper. One opportunity that would have helped him boost the value of his paintings.

Ball pen Paintings
His works are awesome. I'm not an art guy and therefore could not mention any that his works could par with but I do have the eye to appreciate such efforts on such works. It also blew my head off when I inspected the medium and when I looked at Tatay Jayme he said, "Yup, thats ball pen I used" "Whoa!" Such talent spilled over cardboard, some ball ...
